It all started at a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) breakfast in Manchester, TN, where local business owner Mike Cardinal and veteran Craig Kowalski realized the local VFW could use more recognition and support. Wanting to make a difference, they devised an idea: an amateur barbecue competition to raise funds and awareness. They approached us to host the event. We quickly came on board, offering their space for a weekend of smoked meats, live music, and awareness. The first year exceeded all expectations: over 500 people attended, over 20 amateur barbecuers competed, and the event raised over $12,000. Half of the proceeds went directly to the VFW, while the other half was shared among charities chosen by Coffee County’s First Responders. The Military Museum also joined the effort, adding depth and meaning to the celebration. This 100% volunteer-led event is more than just a cook-off—it’s a chance for our community to come together and support those who’ve served and continue to serve our community.
